henna tattoo allergies
Is PPD an ingredient in tattoo ink?

I have a severe allergy to PPD (in hairdyes and now henna)- it helps pigment last longer. I want a tattoo but fear an allergic reaction- what sort of tattoo dyes should I source out? I’ve researched this a lot and found very little about tatto ink make-up, guarantees you’ll get what you want (in chemical regards), even allergy to tattoo…any specifics would help.

I’ve wondered the same, I haven’t gotten any new work since I discovered my allergy. I plan on asking my artist if they keep material safety data sheets (msds) like salons have to. Maybe do a patch test of just ink on your skin. About 1 year before I became sensitized (had my first reaction to black hair dye after 10 years of using it) I had gotten a large piece on my left arm with a lot of black. I did break out in a rash, but it could have been from the ointment (Aquaphor). It did not spread and itch like crazy like my (horrific) reaction to hair dye. I have found henna (indigo) with no PPD (check out www.hennaforhair.com, they have a whole section on PPD also Lush cosmetics) and Clairol’s Jazzing hair color has no PPD but doesn’t get really black :( I hope this helps. Good luck! :)
