Out in the west of Ireland makes a nonsense of my personal importance, my work to hang ups, obsessions, pre-occupations with all things bureaucratic, systematic that the game an excessively large and confusing part in my daily life. No pressure, thoughts, memories on to the next gig, event, Festival. No Falsehoods, lies, bullshit, bollix Artspeak. The most important decisions of the day based on which way the wind to blow is likely when the rain will come when The sun will come out and above all, which of the two local pubs we go to an afternoon pint, while at Oyster Iceland.
In Sligo, the sky is majestic, the beaches, long, wide and windswept. In general, it is cold, stormy and gray, the horizon now shaved a brooding Dutch Seascape. For the few days my family and I were there we were on a mission to get out and walk, embrace the primal force that never manages to make itself heard in the city, to feel the whispers of the myth that penetrated deeply embedded in the landscape of Sligo. This myth is evident in the two stakes on each side of the bay; Benbulben and Knock Area. On the one hand have Benbulben where Diarmuid was killed by Fionn mac Cumhaill, the high point (you can read about the exploits of Fionn and read the Fianna in the Fenian Cycle) of a long pursuit of Diarmuid and Grainne Fionn after both (his wife and his lover of Diarmuid started) ran together.
On the other side you have Knocknarea where Queen Medbh is buried (apparently in an upright position battle in full regalia, looking north toward her enemies Ulster). Medbh been the trigger for one of the largest Irish stories – and one of the world's great epic tales – Tain Bo Cúailnge (The Battle of Raid Cooley). Her grave can be seen for miles and for the people until this day a stone from the foot of the mountain to take place on the cairn on the summit in the vain Hope that luck might hold.
The stories of the two mountains play aa role in both mythological cycle, the route back thousands of years and if they can not help but wonder at life, lived on the ground under our feet and the stories told and have been formed from the landscape to around us. I have read every four cycles. They are wonderfully entertaining, enriching, enlightening stories you see, there's so much more than make up in this beautiful country, the cheap thin, corrupt image and sound of greed, power and money that we hear and see around us.
An often forgotten Sligo County is next Time in the northern section are – West be sure to stop in the Yeats Country, take a walk, a pint, relax and breathe it and keep it there.
