tattoo apprenticing

Is 3 to 5 Years too long to be a tattoo apprentice?
A tattoo artist told me that he apprentices someone for three to five years. That sounds like a long time to me. Is there a standard amount of time for apprenticing? I’ve heard 1 to 2 years from other artists. Does it sound like he just wants 3 to 5 yrs. of free labor?
It has nothing to do with my abilities as a tattoo artist. It is just his general rule.
It’s always best to be fully aware of all techniques, be good at them and able to tattoo great work, than to be sent out early because you only wanted to be an apprentice for a year or two, when you really needed more practice for another few years.
If he says three-five years is what he feels is needed for you to be able to function on your own as a GOOD tattoo artist, then why question him?
