TATTOO Artists: How much Should the shop owner get? HELP?
I’ve heard that 60% to the shop owner and 40% to the tattooer because the owner pays rent , owns the sterilizer, flash, etc. But is that just to start out? And Should the artist be paid more? My main question is a little more complicated …
What about the successful tattoo artists that are booked up for months for portraits or other detailed expensive tattoos?
Now lets just say a successful tattoo artist works 5 days a week and makes $400 a tattoo. Thats $2,000 a week and $8,000 a month. (Bear with me here) Ok, so the shop owner still gets 60%? That would be $4,800 to the shop owner every 4 weeks and $62,400 a year! That would well exceed the normal expenses of an artist.
LONG Story short, what would a very successful tattoo artist pay the shop owner? How would it work out so that the artist is paid fairly?
when i first started going to my tattoo artist he paid rent in the shop. he rented a room and the use of their autoclave. he doesn’t tattoo flash so he didn’t have to deal with that aspect of payment. so monthly there was a flat fee and anything above that was his money. the artist buys all of their own supplies and after that they deserve to get paid for their talent. BUT the shop owner opened up a new location and closed the first and decided that he should change the way he charged. he told my artist that he would now be charging an increased rent (almost double what it was before) AND 50% of all of the tattoos he was doing. my artist promptly quit working at that shop and i KNOW it has hurt the shops business because he was one of the only very talented custom tattoo artists in town and many people will only get tattooed by him.
if i were an artist i would rather pay rent than a percentage of my fee. think about it, if a business is renting a building the person that owns it doesn’t get a percentage of what the business makes, they just get rent and that’s that. artists have things they have to buy too like needles, gloves, green soap, transfer paper, INK!!! that suff is neither cheap or free and the artist is the one actually doing the work and they should get paid like they are the ones drawing in the business.
