Are you spending a weekend in Copenhagen? Do not fall into the trap to just visit the famous shopping street Stroget. Yes, Stroget runs through the heart of Copenhagen and is the Danish capital’s version of London’s Oxford Street. But if you want to get your hands on something quirky or unique you have to do your shopping elsewhere. In this article I have listed some suggestions.
Word of warning: High prices
Denmark is no cheap country to do your shopping. The Danish welfare state has secured that the population is wealthy and the price level is high when compared to other European countries. You may find unique and quirky items on your shopping trip to Copehagen, but it will definitely not be a cheap trip.
Various neighborhoods
The various neighborhoods each have their own characteristics: avant-garde, underground and high fashion. Kronprinsensgade and around is packed with stores selling Danish fashionable clothes, shoes, house ware and food. You will find art and design in the area around Amalienborg, and small interesting stores in Larsbjornsstraede and Studiestraede, which houses tattoo parlors, vintage shops, designer clothes and some of the city’s most cozy cafes and bars. Straedet has smaller venues selling jewelry, arts and crafts and antiques. Elsewhere, check Elmegade (Norrebro) that has a cool record store, a lot of street wear and sneaker stores and upcoming designers’ unique productions. Istedgade (Vesterbro) houses the most famous coffee shops, local designers and loads of Middle East merchandise such as lamps, pipes and statuettes in the kitschy corner. Osterbrogade (Osterbro) has some of Copenhagens most exclusive stores selling international brands.
